Steps to Summer Study Abroad

Step 1: Review the OIE Website

Review the list of suggested programs, learn about the credit-transfer process, review past student experiences abroad, and much more!

Step 2: Meet with the OIE

If you still have questions, attend drop-ins or schedule a meeting with a member of the OIE. 

Step 3: Apply to Study Abroad

Apply directly to the study abroad program for admission by their deadline. Complete the OIE Approval process by January 29, 2026 (summer funding + academic credit) or April 1, 2026 (academic credit only).

Step 4: Complete Pre-departure Requirements

Watch OIE Pre-departure modules and complete health and safety pre-departure requirements!

Before You Apply

  • You may earn up to 8-credits for summer study abroad.
  • Programs must be at least 4 weeks long to be eligible for academic credit and at least 6 weeks long to be eligible for Harvard summer funding. Only students who receive financial aid will be considered for summer funding.
  • You may earn credit toward your concentration, secondary field, language citation, language requirement, Divisional distribution, and/or electives.
  • Courses taken abroad cannot fulfill General Education requirements.
  • Rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are in good standing may study abroad.
  • International students may not study abroad in their home country.
  • All programs must be able to issue a formal transcript that includes course names, grades, and credits/hours earned.
  • It is possible to study abroad for both a summer and a semester!

Drop-In Hours (during the academic year) 
In-Person: Monday - Thursday, 2:00-4:00 p.m. 
Virtual: Thursdays, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
