Return to Harvard

Follow these steps to complete the transfer credit process.

Request an official transcript

In order to transfer credit from your term abroad, we must receive your transcript directly from your study abroad program or university (we cannot accept transcripts from students). Please request an official transcript sent to:

Paper Transcripts:
Office of International Education
1414 Massachusetts Avenue, 3rd Floor
Cambridge, MA 02138

Electronic Transcripts:
oie@fas.harvard.edu

The OIE cannot provide you with an official study abroad transcript. Remember to request official transcripts for yourself for purposes of applying to fellowships, graduate school, etc.

Complete final transfer credit steps

  • If you took a language instruction course abroad, consult the Language Credit Policy to learn about next steps and if a placement exam is required. If it is, contact the respective language department advisor to arrange an exam as soon as your program has ended. Please note that Spanish language exams should be coordinated directly with the Placement Office at placement-help@fas.harvard.edu.
  • To request that a study abroad course be counted toward the language requirement, a language citation, or a secondary field requirement, please contact the respective department for guidance once the transfer credit has been posted to your Harvard record.
  • To request that a course be approved to fulfill a divisional distribution requirement, email divdist@fas.harvard.edu

Submit your study abroad evaluation

Study abroad evaluations are invaluable to prospective study abroad students, so please take the time to complete a thoughtful evaluation of your experience abroad here.

Update your resume

Study abroad students are more desirable job candidates. Add your semester study abroad to your resume highlighting transferable skills and relevant courses and be prepared to field questions about the experience during interviews. A recent report published by the Forum on Education Abroad shows that study abroad students earn higher starting salaries and are promoted more quickly in early career roles than their peers.

Explore international postgraduate fellowships

Students who have studied abroad have gone on to secure academic, public service, and purposeful travel fellowships. It’s not too early to start exploring and planning as deadlines can be as early as September of senior year. Connect with URAF to learn more!

Become a Student Advisor

If you participated in semester or academic year study abroad, consider becoming an OIE Student Advisor! This paid position allows you to share your study abroad experience with prospective students.

All semester study abroad students receive an invitation to apply, and hiring is finalized each spring for the following academic year. For more information, contact Nicole Garcia.
