Apply to Summer Study Abroad

Applying for credit and Harvard summer funding (February 8 deadline)

Apply to your study abroad program 

  • Apply for admission directly to your study abroad program or university by their deadline or February 8, whichever is first (when applying for funding, you will be required to acknowledge that you have applied to your program).
  • Do not wait for an admission decision to complete the additional steps below


Request Course Approval through the OIE (opens December 18, due by February 8)

  • Review the list of suggested programs 
  • Click on the Request Course Approval button under the program name; you will be taken to the OIE application portal
    • If the program you are applying to does not appear on the list of suggested programs, click here to apply to the generic “Summer Study Abroad Program”
  • Follow the instructions within the OIE application portal to complete the required electronic documents
  • Download the Summer Course Approval Form from the OIE portal and complete the required information 
    • Obtain course syllabi (for submission to OIE; see below)
    • To obtain faculty signatures for concentration, secondary, and language courses, email the form and course syllabi to the relevant department adviser. Before signing, the adviser may request to meet with you to discuss your course(s) and study abroad program
    •  Once the Summer Course Approval Form is complete with required signatures, email it to oie@fas.harvard.edu by February 8, 2024. Don't forget to attach course syllabi! 


To apply for Harvard funding, complete the above steps and the Application for Summer Funding form within your Request for Course Approval by February 8, 2024

You may submit course approval requests for a maximum of two programs; your first-choice program will be considered for funding.

Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Applying for credit only (April 1 deadline)

Apply to your study abroad program by their published deadline

  • Apply for admission directly to your study abroad program or university by their deadline
  • Do not wait for an admission decision to complete the additional steps below
     

Request Course Approval through the OIE (opens December 18, due by April 1)

  • Review the list of suggested programs 
  • Click on the Request Course Approval button under the program name; you will be taken to the OIE application portal
    • If the program you are applying to does not appear on the list of suggested programs, click here to apply to the generic “Summer Study Abroad Program”
  • Follow the instructions within the OIE application portal to complete the required electronic documents
  • Download the Summer Course Approval Form and complete the required information 
    • Obtain course syllabi (for submission to OIE; see below)

Applying to a Harvard Summer School (HSS) Study Abroad program (January 25 deadline)

Please visit the HSS webpage to view their summer offerings and information about applying and funding. Applications for Summer 2024 are due January 25, 2024.
