Summer Funding
While Harvard offers funding for summer study abroad, it is not guaranteed.
Students who previously received Harvard funding for summer study abroad through either Harvard Summer School or the OIE are ineligible to receive summer funding a second time.
To be considered for summer funding:
- Students must currently be receiving Harvard financial aid. If you are not on financial aid due to outside scholarships, please email summerfunding@fas.harvard.edu to learn if you can be considered eligible for study abroad funding.
- Programs must be at least 6-weeks long and take place in one location (program-related excursions and trips not withstanding).
- Summer funding is not able to cover program application fees.
- Students participating on programs between 6-7 weeks are eligible to receive a funding award up to $8,000 + travel stipend
- Students participating on programs 8-weeks or longer are eligible to receive a funding award of up to $13,000 + travel stipend
For more information and eligibility requirements, please visit the Summer Funding page. Instructions for applying to OIE-approved funding-eligible summer programs are found here.

Some study abroad programs offer their own grants/scholarships to accepted students. Such awards often do not cover the full cost of the program, but may offset the cost by hundreds or even thousands of dollars. A separate application may be required, so reach out to your program to ask.
Financial Aid Loans
If you are on financial aid during the academic year and will be earning academic credit during the summer, you are eligible for a low-interest loan through the Financial Aid Office.
