Steps to Studying Abroad

Everyone can study abroad with careful planning (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are in good standing are eligible for semester and/or academic year study abroad)!

Keep the following in mind before applying:

  • Reach out to a Student Advisor or Student Ambassador to hear about their time abroad
  • Read about your peers’ experiences abroad in program evaluations
  • Identify your goals for study abroad and identify 1-2 programs that align with them
  • Speak with your academic advisor(s) to understand concentration and/or secondary field-related details as you narrow down your study abroad options
  • Meet with an OIE Advisor during drop-ins to discuss your plans and next steps!

Step 1: Review the OIE Website

Look through the list of approved programs, learn about the credit-transfer process, review past student experiences abroad, and much more!

Step 2: Meet with the OIE

If you still have questions, attend drop-ins or schedule a meeting with a member of the OIE. You can also schedule a coffee-chat with a recently returned OIE Student Adviser to learn about their semester abroad.

Step 3: Apply to Study Abroad

Apply directly to the study abroad program for admission by their deadline. Complete the OIE Approval process by October 1 (spring study abroad) or March 1 (fall study abroad)

Step 4: Attend Pre-Departure and Complete Requirements

Attend an in-person pre-departure orientation at the OIE, complete health and safety requirements, and cancel Housing for the term you’ll be abroad. Check email for details!
