For Summer 2021
Due to the severe disruption to both domestic and international travel as a result of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, Harvard-related cross-border travel is prohibited until further notice. Thus, in lieu of an in-country summer experience, Harvard College will allow students to participate in one of several study abroad programs which will be offering remote coursework.
List of Programs and Courses
A list of approved programs and courses can be found here (updated 2/8/21). As these programs and courses have been vetted by the OIE, they are the only non-Harvard "study abroad" courses eligible for transfer credit towards your Harvard degree. We will continue to update this list as more programs and courses become available. These programs and courses provide an alternate option to online courses offered by Harvard Summer School. For information regarding Harvard Summer School virtual courses, please visit the HSS College Student Overview webpage.
Applying to a Program
You must apply directly to the program for admission (as with any non-Harvard study abroad program). The course titles listed in the approved programs document are hyperlinked to each program’s website, where you will find detailed information about specific program application requirements and up-to-date information related to program costs and deadlines. Application deadlines vary, so be sure to apply to your program of choice in advance of its published deadline. Some programs may admit students on a rolling basis and if there is limited space available, spots may fill up before the published deadline.
Requesting Transfer Credit towards Your Harvard Degree
To request approval for virtual summer study abroad courses to count towards your Harvard degree, please complete the OIE Summer Online Non-Harvard Coursework application no later than:
- March 2 if you are also applying for Harvard funding (see below for more information).
- May 1 if you are only applying for credit – not funding.
In addition to indicating the program to which you are applying, you must also provide information about each course you plan to take, including which type of credit you are seeking (concentration, secondary field, elective, language citation). If you are seeking Concentration, Secondary, or Language Citation credit, it is your responsibility to contact the appropriate academic department for credit approval. Due to the virtual nature of this coursework, please ask the adviser to email Brian Libby, Assistant Director of the OIE, at email@example.com with their approval of your course(s).
There is a limited amount of Harvard funding available to help cover the cost of one summer experience, including tuition for virtual non-Harvard summer study. If you are interested in applying for funding, please complete the OCS CARAT application for non-Harvard online coursework no later than March 2. This funding application is separate from the OIE application for requesting transfer credit.
Students receiving need-based financial aid may also be eligible for a loan from the Financial Aid Office (FAO). Please visit the FAO website for more information.
Transfer Credit Policies
The transfer credit policies explained here also apply to summer 2021 virtual non-Harvard coursework.
