For Summer 2020:
Due to the severe disruption to both domestic and international travel as a result of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, Harvard-related summer travel has been restricted until after August 31. Thus, in lieu of an in-country experience, Harvard College will allow students participate in one of several study abroad programs which will be offering remote coursework.
List of Programs and Courses
The list of programs and courses can be found here as well as on the Office of Undergraduate Education website. As these programs and courses have been vetted by the OIE, they are the only non-Harvard "study abroad" courses eligible for transfer credit towards your Harvard degree. We will continue to update this list as more programs and courses become available. For information regarding Harvard Summer School virtual courses, please scroll to the bottom of the page.
Applying to a Program
You must apply directly to the program for admission (as with any non-Harvard study abroad program). The course titles in the list above are hyperlinked to each program’s website. Please consult program websites for detailed information about their specific application requirements, as well as for the most up-to-date information about cost and deadlines. Application deadlines vary, and may be earlier than the OIE’s May 15th deadline.
Requesting Transfer Credit towards Your Harvard Degree
To request review and approval for these courses to apply towards your Harvard degree, please complete the OIE Summer Online Non-Harvard Coursework application no later than Friday, May 15. In addition to indicating the program to which you are applying, you must also provide information about each course you plan to take, including which type of credit you are seeking (concentration, secondary field, elective, language citation). If you are seeking Concentration, Secondary, or Language Citation credit, it is your responsibility to contact the appropriate academic department for credit approval. You will find the names of departmental advisers in the People tab on the OIE website. Due to the virtual nature of this coursework, please ask the adviser to email Brian Libby, Assistant Director of the OIE, at email@example.com with their approval of your course(s).
Funding, Scholarships, and Loans
If you previously applied for and were awarded summer 2020 OCS funding for study abroad on a non-Harvard program, you may use your funding towards the cost of these programs. Please also complete the OCS CARAT application for non-Harvard online coursework no later than May 15.
Alternatively, you may use your funding towards one or two Harvard Summer School courses approved for Harvard College credit, at least one of which must have an international focus, a list of which can be found here. To use your funding in this way, please complete the OCS CARAT application for HSS coursework and also follow the registration instructions for College students on the HSS website no later than May 1.
For other students taking Harvard Summer School courses, a limited number of scholarships are available. The application is available here and is due on Monday, May 4 at noon.
Students receiving need-based financial aid may also be eligible for a loan from the Financial Aid Office. The loan can only be applied towards the cost of courses for which you will receive credit at Harvard. More information is available on the Financial Aid Office website here.
Transfer Credit Policies
The transfer credit policies explained here also apply to summer 2020 virtual coursework.
