Study abroad on a Harvard-affiliated program that enrolls you directly in regular university courses at the Pontificia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio) alongside regularly enrolled Brazilian university students. The Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad - Rio de Janeiro (CASA-Rio de Janeiro) program, builds upon one of Brown University's longest running study abroad programs, developed over thirty years ago in close collaboration with Brown's Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. Administered by Brown University, CASA-Rio de Janeiro allows undergraduate students from Consortium schools (Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Trinity College Dublin, University of Melbourne, University of Pennsylvania, and Vanderbilt University) with all Portuguese language proficiencies to study alongside Brazilian and international students, while living with a Brazilian host family. A Language Orientation and Cultural Pro-seminar is an intensive ourse taken during the first four weeks of the program in Rio de Janeiro and Savador de Bahía.
Through participating in the CASA-Rio de Janeiro program, you will have the opportunity to improve your Portguese language skills while also taking concentration, secondary field, and/or elective courses (department approval required). The program is divided in two tracks: Track 1, Portuguese language and Specialized Topics is delivered in English for students with beginner to low intermediate Portuguese language skills; students are enrolled in Portuguese as a Second language, and specialized courses in Brazilian society, history, and culture. Track 2, Portuguese Language and Direct Enrollment is delivered in Portuguese for students with intermediate to advanced Portuguese language skills; students work alongisde fellow Brazilian students in either three direct enrollment courses or two direct enrollment courses and Portuguese as a Second Language.

Prerequisites: Ideally at least one year of Portuguese language; minimum gpa of 3.0
